Cartboom: A Playful Display Font for Creative Branding Projects

It was a quiet Tuesday morning when I opened my design board for a new branding project—a small, locally-owned cupcake shop looking to refresh their visual identity. The brief mentioned a desire for something fun, approachable, and a little whimsical. As I browsed through my font library, Cartboom caught my eye. It’s a playful display font that has a fun cartoon feel, perfect for designs that need a touch of humor. I’ve used it before in children’s birthday invitations, but this was the first time I considered it for a full brand system.

Cartboom for Logo Design and Brand Identity

My first instinct was to test Cartboom in the logo. I opened a new Illustrator file and typed out the shop’s name. The font’s bold, rounded edges and slightly exaggerated letterforms immediately gave the logo a youthful, energetic vibe. Since Cartboom is a display font, it worked best at larger sizes—perfect for a logo that would appear on signage, packaging, and social media headers.

I adjusted the kerning and added a subtle drop shadow to give it dimension. The result was a logo that felt like it belonged in a cartoon bakery—exactly the kind of charm the client was going for. I made sure to present it with a clean sans serif font as the secondary typeface to maintain balance and readability in subheadings and body text.

Using Cartboom on Packaging Design and Product Labels

Once the logo got the green light, I moved on to packaging mockups. Cartboom is great for children designs, logos, invitations, and other designs that need a touch of humor—and that same personality translated well onto cupcake boxes and thank-you tags. I used it for the “Handmade Daily” stamp on the back of boxes and for flavor names on small product labels.

One thing I noticed is that Cartboom works best in short-form text. Its playful nature can become overwhelming in long paragraphs, but as a headline font or accent typeface, it shines. The client loved how it made their packaging feel more personable and unique compared to standard bakery fonts.

Cartboom in Social Media Graphics and Digital Branding

Next, I built out the brand’s Instagram templates. Cartboom is a display font that commands attention, so I used it for post headlines and call-to-action buttons. I paired it with a clean, modern sans serif for captions and descriptions to maintain a visual hierarchy.

On digital platforms, Cartboom added a strong personality without sacrificing professionalism. It stood out in the feed and gave the brand a memorable visual hook. I also tested it on the homepage hero section of their website mockup, and it worked surprisingly well as a headline font that immediately communicated the brand’s tone.

Cartboom for Invitations and Print Marketing Materials

While the main client was a bakery, I couldn’t help but think of how Cartboom could be used in other creative contexts. I’ve used it before for children’s party invitations, and it’s ideal for that niche. The font’s cartoon-like bounce and rounded forms make it feel friendly and inviting—perfect for event-based designs.

In this project, I created a seasonal flyer for a “Cupcake Decorating Workshop” and used Cartboom for the event title. It made the flyer feel more engaging and approachable. I also tested it in a printed menu layout, where it worked well as a section header but not so much in longer body copy—reinforcing the idea that Cartboom is best used as a display font rather than a text font.

Font Pairing Tips with Cartboom

Because Cartboom is such a bold, character-driven font, it’s important to pair it with more neutral typefaces. I used a minimalist sans serif for most body text and a light script font for accent quotes and taglines. This helped maintain a cohesive visual language without overwhelming the reader.

When designing for print or digital use, I recommend testing Cartboom with a serif font for a more elegant contrast or with a modern handwritten font for a more artisanal feel. It’s a flexible font that adapts well depending on the supporting typography and color palette.

What to Check Before Using Cartboom in Client Work

Before finalizing the brand system, I always double-check font licensing and file formats. Since Cartboom is a display font meant for creative projects, I made sure it included all the necessary weights and styles for both print and digital use. I also checked for multilingual support in case the client expanded their offerings or marketing to a broader audience.

It’s also a good idea to test the font in different contexts—on a business card, a shop sign, a mobile screen, or a product mockup. Cartboom performed well across all these mediums, especially when used at appropriate sizes and with good contrast against the background.
